Getting ready to head up to the house in a few hours. I miss it when I’m not there.

We have made some progress with the kitchen! Floors are refinished, walls are painted, the hutch has been painted, and a new fridge delivered! All we need now is the stove.

I decided not to hang any more shelves on the wall for now. I’m going to hang my Lena Corwin map of Brooklyn over the radiator. For now everything has a place. I like how clean and bright the white paint looks.

First of all I can’t remember when the last time was that I went on a vacation (a very long time ago!). I decided a couple of weeks ago that this would be the summer that I actually went on a trip. My husband goes somewhere every summer, usually a camping/fishing kind of thing which I have no interest in doing. So, I was planning a trip to Europe to visit friends, and it turned into a trip to Paris for ten days with my husband! I am so looking forward to August!

A few years ago I would never have painted a room all white, now that’s all I want to do. Funny how things change. I am about to start our small kitchen re-do. Plaster repair, painting, and new appliances. In other news the roofers are starting on our new roof today! Although not as exciting, it is LONG overdue! Now when the wind blows I won’t be afraid that the roof is going to blow off!

Springtime in Brooklyn.

Before… Some day I will show the “before” this photo. I have to find and scan it. The day bed is made from the tongue and groove boards that were once dividing this room. They were two tiny rooms with old hand painted wallpaper. We thought it might be nice to reuse the wood and build a day bed/trunk for storage. The lid was too heavy for me to ever lift! There isn’t any ventilation, so it got a bit “musty” if you know what I mean. I never really liked how it came out, but lived with it for six years.

The walls had to be repaired, and the biggest mistake we made was not putting the floor underneath. The floors are finished with a linseed oil, beeswax, and turpentine mixture. Which is nice, but you can see what happens when you put a rug on top of it. Some day we will have it sanded and refinished.

This is the other side of the narrow room. We built a half wall with a bookshelf to cover a large ugly pipe that ran across the floor.

After!

This room is next to the dining room. You can’t tell from the picture, but there is a step. It is built on top of a giant boulder! It’s a little strange, but cozy. It’s one of the many charms of an old house.
